Today, Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt announced that its Healthcare Industry Group Leader Bruce Howell was appointed to serve as a founding member of the National Board of Health Lawyers, a new entity under the National Board of Trial Advocacy. Howell was nominated by the American Bar Association Health Law Section to be one of just 10 attorneys nationally to serve on this founding board.

The newly established NBHL aims to establish criteria for board certification in healthcare law, setting the standard by which specialists should be judged.

“I am honored to serve on behalf of my peers in the health care legal field,” said Bruce Howell, Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt Healthcare Industry Group Leader. “I look forward to representing  the health law practice as our country continues to grapple with a complex healthcare landscape that demands a high-level of integrity for legal services on behalf of clients.”

NBHL is a new body operating under the National Board of Trial Advocacy, a board-certifying agency accredited by the American Bar Association. Established in 1977, National Board of Trial Advocacy has a track record of working to recognize and promote excellence in legal advocacy through a national program certifying specialists predicated on high standards of demonstrated competence and integrity. The Board works to develop standards that can protect clients who need assurances that they are selecting the best and brightest lawyers and help protect lawyers who want to refer their cases to qualified lawyers.

A pioneer in the practice of health law, Bruce Howell leads Schwabe’s Healthcare Industry Group. Bruce was among the founders of the Dallas (Texas) Bar Association’s Health Law Section and one of the first Board Certified Health Lawyers in that state. He is also the past Chair of the Health Law Section of the State Bar of Texas.

Bruce counsels clients on a broad array of health law issues, including reimbursement, fraud and abuse, managed care issues, physician practice management issues and the Affordable Care Act. He handles cases involving genetics, organ transplant technology, laboratory matters, clinical research and healthcare insurance coverage. Bruce also helps providers and businesses comply with and find financial opportunities in connection with the Affordable Care Act and the changing healthcare reform movement.
