Professional Experience Larry Smith serves the firm in Washington, D.C., working with our lawyers supporting the interests of Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt's clients before the U.S. Congress and federal administrative agencies. He brings over 13 years of experience in government service on Capitol Hill and more than two decades in the private sector. He is the founder and president of Legislative Strategies, Inc., a bipartisan government relations firm assisting a diverse client base on a broad range of issues before the federal government. He had previously served as Senior Vice President and Director of the Government Relations Division of Burson-Marsteller, and as a name partner at Johnson, Smith, Dover, Kitzmiller, & Stewart, Inc.
Mr. Smith began his career on Capitol Hill as staff assistant to Senator Mark O. Hatfield (R-Oregon), which led to his appointment as Republican Staff Director of the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration. In 1981, he was appointed as Senate Deputy Sergeant-at-Arms, and was then elected by the entire Senate to serve as Sergeant-at-Arms, the Senate's chief executive, law enforcement, and protocol officer, responsible for more than 1,300 Senate employees and managing a budget in excess of $80 million. Serving under Majority Leaders Howard H. Baker, Jr. (R-Tennessee) and Robert J. Dole (R-Kansas), Mr. Smith worked closely with senators from both parties, his counterpart officers in the House, and representatives of the Executive Branch.
Mr. Smith's nongovernmental experience includes serving as the Manager of Corporate Relations at Herman Miller, Inc., a leading American designer and producer of office furniture products.
