Professional Experience Mark Long is the managing partner of Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt, where he has practiced since 1982. As a shareholder of the firm, his practice focuses on merger, acquisition, divestiture and other significant business transactions, corporate finance and corporate counseling. Before becoming the firm's Managing Partner, Mr. Long was the chair of the firm's Mergers & Acquisitions Practice Group, which has represented clients in hundreds of significant transactions in the past five years, many for which Mr. Long served as the lead transaction counsel. Also, Mr. Long is actively involved in the firm's health care practice, where he represents numerous medical and dental groups, individuals and healthcare-related ancillary businesses. Mr. Long's health care practice focuses primarily on corporate and entity governance, health care finance and significant business transactions involving the the firm's health care clients.
In addition, Mr. Long is an active member of the firm's Business and Corporate Practice Group. Mr. Long's engagements have involved the representation of both privately- and publicly-owned businesses in a variety of industries, including the manufacturing, service, distribution and warehousing, retail, wholesale, technology, transportation, communications, and health care industries. Mr. Long has served as local transaction counsel, working with lead national counsel, in numerous large national and international business transactions.
In addition to representing businesses, Mr. Long has represented investors and management in a variety of business contexts, including venture capital and angel investments, credit arrangements, changes in control, fiduciary challenges to management in merger, acquisition or divestiture settings, etc.
Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Long worked as a legislative assistant to Oregon Senator Bob Packwood (1975-1977), and as a principal of a Washington, D.C.-based federal affairs and governmental relations consulting firm (1977-1982). Professional & Community Activities Mr. Long is a frequent contributor to professional publications and programs on a range of topics including risk allocation and mitigation devices in the transactional setting, corporate governance and finances, business combinations of professional organizations, the use of insurance in business and business transactions, and third party legal opinions in the transactional context, as well as law firm management.
Mr. Long is a member of and actively involved in the American Bar Association and the Oregon State Bar, including the ABA Business Law and Healthcare Law Sections, and the Oregon State Bar Sections on Business Law and Securities Law. A native Oregonian, Mr. Long is active in numerous community causes. He is active on the Executive Committee and the Health Policy Committee and serves as a director of the Oregon Business Association. He also serves as a director of The Freshwater Trust, a nonprofit organization dedicated to river and wildlife habitat restoration. He is active on behalf of Metropolitan Family Services, where he serves on its Investment Committee. In addition, Mr. Long is a past board member of Loaves and Fishes, a nonprofit dedicated to meeting the nutritional needs of Portland's and Southwest Washington's elderly population.
Mr. Long has been recognized by Oregon's Super Lawyers® magazine since 2006, and recognized by Best Lawyers in America in the areas of business organizations and corporate law. In 2012, Mr. Long was recognized for his "Leadership in the Law" by the Daily Journal of Commerce. He has also received a national award for his innovative initiatives and successes as the firm's Managing Partner.
