Professional Experience

Matthew Wilmot is the leader of the firm's Trademark, Copyright, and Transactional Intellectual Property practice group as well as the firm's Technology Industry Group.

Mr. Wilmot's practice is focused on the representation of technology-based companies and clients in other industries having intellectual property assets, including software companies and independent software and mobile app developers; SaaS companies and other providers of cloud-based services; bioscience companies, in particular, diagnostics companies; media and content distribution companies; footwear and apparel companies; providers of business intelligence data; and manufacturing and distribution companies. He also regularly advises industry standards organizations on intellectual property issues relating to the adoption, use, and distribution of technology standards.

Mr. Wilmot has represented clients in a broad range of intellectual property, technology, and other related transactions both in the United States and internationally, including patent and technology licensing; software licensing (including SaaS); trademark, copyright, and content licensing; collaborations and consortia; research and development (including university research); technology transfer; materials transfer; supply and manufacturing; distribution and resale; and the overall development, protection, commercialization, and use of intellectual property rights.

In addition to his transactional IP practice, Mr. Wilmot also has a recognized trademark, trade dress, unfair competition, trade secret, copyright, e-commerce, domain name, and intellectual property litigation practice. In particular, Mr. Wilmot regularly assists clients with searching and clearing trademarks both domestically and internationally; prosecuting domestic and international trademark applications; developing and maintaining trademark portfolios; and providing copyright, trademark, and trade secret advice and counseling. He regularly advises clients on domain name and website issues; intellectual property due diligence; entertainment, media, and advertising law; and the enforcement of intellectual property rights both in state and federal courts, as well as before the USPTO's Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.

Since 2009, Mr. Wilmot has regularly been named to the Oregon Super Lawyers Rising Stars list, a distinction that recognizes outstanding lawyers who have attained a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement.

Professional & Community Activities

Mr. Wilmot is a member of the Intellectual Property section of both the Oregon State Bar and the State Bar of California, and is a member of the Multnomah Bar Association. He is active in the International Trademark Association ("INTA"), regularly attends the INTA annual meeting, and has hosted INTA roundtables on various trademark-oriented topics. He is also actively involved in the central Oregon business community, having served as a member of the Board of Directors for Economic Development for Central Oregon ("EDCO").
