Renewable Energy

The Pacific Northwest is already seen as a leader in the development and practical application of renewable energy resources, yet we have only begun to scratch the surface in this opportunity-rich area. The next few years will bring major changes in how every new energy project integrates with the environment and how it is powered. Solar, wind, biomass, micro-hydro, and even wave energy technologies are poised to become commonplace and in some instances even legally required as part of new development or renovations. Our attorneys can assist owners, developers, designers, builders, utilities, new businesses and start-ups navigate the changes and take full advantage of the opportunities that renewable energy systems will bring.

We represent electric utilities, agribusiness interests and real estate developers, who are all seeking to decrease their carbon footprint and impact on our natural world. We have assisted clients with the development of projects for "cold ironing" ships in port for energy efficiency and in reduction of particulate and carbon emissions, and with contracts to trade Nitrogen Oxides (NOX) and Sulfur Oxide (SOX) emission reduction credits for infrastructure and industrial development funding. Schwabe lawyers have helped clients to utilize federal and state energy tax credits for capital improvements or remodeling existing buildings, in both commercial and residential developments. Wind projects, photovoltaic, solar-thermal and alternative fuels projects may all qualify for tax incentives or subsidies that decrease investment costs and make the dream of sustainable buildings and developments a reality. The Pacific Northwest is also on the cutting edge of biomass and wave technologies, thanks to substantial investments in university-based and private research.

Schwabe lawyers in our renewable energy group are working closely with entrepreneurs to assist with structuring and financing transactions, forming new and dynamic enterprises and ensuring intellectual property protection both in the U.S. and abroad.
