Last month, regional law firm Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt received the United Way Performance Award for Greatest Increase in Percentage of Employee Participation in the United Way of the Columbia-Willamette's 2008 workplace campaign. Schwabe increased its participation by 71 percent, with 184 employees participating in 2008 compared to 107 employees participating in 2007.
"The United Way is an extraordinary organization," said Mark Long, managing partner at Schwabe. "We believe that now, more than ever, charitable organizations need continued support."
Much of the success of Schwabe's participation is credited to Catherine Hooper, who won last year's Campaign Coordinator Award. Campaign coordinators are the source of leadership for a campaign within an organization and are a driving force behind a company's overall success.
"Increasing participation by 71 percent is almost unheard of," said Pamela Albee, account executive with the United Way of the Columbia-Willamette. "Schwabe continues to take a leadership role every single year and we are so thrilled to see their commitments carry through good and not so good economic times."
United Way of the Columbia-Willamette is a local, nonprofit organization that works to advance the common good by focusing on such basics as education, income, and health. Its goal is to create long-lasting changes that prevent problems from happening in the first place. United Way has been helping people in the four-county metro area since 1920. It works with community leaders and service providers to identify and prioritize the needs, leverage contributions, and achieve measurable results.
